Grand Opening of Adelaide University Wind Tunnel
The official launch of Australia's newest and second largest wind tunnel took place on August 9, 2011, at MechTest, a commercial branch of the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Adelaide.
Professor Mike Brooks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Adelaide, conducted the ceremony. The Facility is located in the School of Mechanical Engineering laboratory at the Thebarton precinct.
Williams have played a leading role in the design, manufacturing and installation the tunnel, which is the only industrial-scale wind tunnel in South Australia, and features three working sections, aeroacoustic research capabilities and automotive models up to ¼ scale.
According to the University, "The wind tunnel is the first and only industrial scale wind tunnel in South Australia and is the second largest in Australia. The purpose built facility and its dedicated staff will provide local industry with new capability in research and testing. It is designed to cater for a variety of industries including defence, energy, aerospace, building and sports amongst others. The tunnel will be used for a wide ranger of applications including wind-engineering and aerodynamics studies for aircraft structures, aerospace, wind turbine testing and much more."
